John Evans Atta Mills of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is second with 35.6 per cent, followed by Paa Kwesi Nduom of the conservative Convention People’s Party (CPP), Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC) with 2.1 per cent, and Emmanuel Ansah-Antwi of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) with 0.4 per cent.
NPP member John Agyekum Kufuor has been Ghana’s president since 2001. In 2004, he earned a second four-year term with 53.36 per cent of all cast ballots. Kufuor is constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term in office.
Akufo-Addo is running on a platform based on improving education services in Ghana. On Nov. 24, the NPP candidate declared that his party is "not into politics because we want to make money, but to offer ourselves to serve and promote development, the rule of law and human rights, where every individual would have the freedom to make constructive criticism and engage in legitimate businesses without fear."
The presidential election is scheduled for Dec. 7.
