(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Norway’s governing party has solidified its lead, according to a poll by TNS Gallup released by TV2. 33.6 per cent of respondents would vote for the Labour Party (DNA) in the next federal election, up 4.4 points since October.

The Progress Party (FrP) is second with 23.5 per cent, followed by the Conservatives (H) with 16.4 per cent, the Christian People (KrF) with 7.4 per cent, the Socialist Left (SV) with 7.1 per cent, the Liberal Left (V) with 5.2 per cent, and the Agrarians (Sp) with four per cent.

In September 2005, Norwegian voters renewed the Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament). Final results gave the Red-Green alliance—encompassing Labour, the Socialist Left and the Agrarians—87 seats in the 169-member legislative branch. Labour leader Jens Stoltenberg—who held the highest office from March 2000 to October 2001—took over as prime minister for the second time.

In this survey, the level of support for the governing parties stands at 44.7 per cent, while the two main opposition forces—Progress and the Conservatives—reach 39.9 per cent.

On Nov. 26, Norwegian finance minister Kristin Halvorsen said the government will put forward a fiscal stimulus package in January, saying, "The purpose of the fiscal package is to dampen the effects in Norway of the international financial crisis; the measures will be targeted towards fighting unemployment. (…) We will prioritize temporary measures that can be reversed when the economic situation has normalized."

The next legislative election is expected to take place in September 2009.
