In 1986, a rebel group called the National Resistance Army (NRA) captured Kampala and installed Museveni as president. Museveni would eventually win the 1996 and 2001 presidential elections.
In a nationwide referendum that took place in July 2005, Ugandans voted in favour of a multi-party political system. While the 1995 constitution limited the incumbent president to two consecutive five-year terms, an amendment allowed him to become a contender once again. In February 2006, Museveni won the presidential election with 59.28 per cent of the vote as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate.
Earlier this month, NRM spokesperson Mary Karooro Okurut discussed the future of the African country, saying, "If Museveni lost an election, he would definitely hand over power. Even the NRM as a party would encourage such a move. We would tell him, thank you very much for the good leadership over the last 20 years. We would then escort him to Rwakitura. (…) We have been fighting for democracy and we would uphold the Constitution if he lost in any unlikely event."
The next presidential election in Uganda is tentatively scheduled for February 2011.
