(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Slovakia’s Direction-Social Democracy (Smer) continues to hold a confident lead over its political adversaries, according a poll by UVVM. 44.8 per cent of respondents would vote for the governing party in the next legislative election, down 1.7 points since September.

The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) is second with 13.6 per cent, followed by the Slovak National Party (SNS) with 10.6 per cent, the People’s Party – Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (LS-HZDS) with 9.4 per cent, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 8.5 per cent, and the Party of the Hungarian Coalition (SMK) with 8.3 per cent.

The Free Forum (SF), the Slovak Communist Party (KSS), the Movement for Democracy (HZD), and the New Civic Alliance (ANO) garner significantly less support.

Slovak voters renewed their legislative branch in June 2006. Final results placed Smer—led by Robert Fico—as the top party in the European country with 50 seats. In July, Fico officially took over as prime minister, in a coalition encompassing Smer, the SNS and the LS-HZDS.

On Oct. 22, Fico commented on the effect the global economic crisis may have on the Slovak nation, adding "If the crisis influences economic growth, the government will act. The government would cope with economic growth reduced by less than one percentage point with gusto, and nobody would notice it."

The Slovak prime minister added that care would have to be taken so as not to burden certain key businesses, saying, "We won’t jeopardize the budget parameters as we set them, nor the social programs. We’ll have to find resources elsewhere."
