Obama became the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee on Aug. 28, while McCain accepted the Republican Party’s nomination on Sept. 4.

In May, McCain discussed his possible role in the Middle East if he becomes president, saying, "I would have a hands-on approach. I would be the chief negotiator. I have been there for thirty years. I know the leaders, I know them extremely well. [Israel’s Labour party leader] Ehud Barak and I have gone back thirty years."

U.S. president George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The U.S. presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
