(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – More people in France now regard Nicolas Sarkozy in a positive light, according to a poll by Ipsos published in Le Point. 44 per cent of respondents have a favourable opinion of their president, up five points since July.
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – More people in France now regard Nicolas Sarkozy in a positive light, according to a poll by Ipsos published in Le Point. 44 per cent of respondents have a favourable opinion of their president, up five points since July.
Public satisfaction with French prime minister François Fillon also improved. 52 per cent of respondents have a favourable opinion of Fillon, up four points in a month.
In May 2007, Sarkozy, candidate for the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and former interior minister, won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister.
On Aug. 28, Sarkozy said that the government will introduce a 1.1 per cent tax on investment income that will help fund a project geared towards helping poor unemployed individuals find jobs. The president defended the measure, saying, "I think it is normal, in an effort for solidarity, that everyone should contribute to getting three million of our countrymen out of poverty and exclusion."
