Former left-wing presidential candidate Ollanta Humala is second with 16.9 per cent, followed by Keiko Sofía Fujimori—the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori—with 15.8 per cent, former conservative presidential candidate Lourdes Flores Nano with 13.3 per cent, and former president Alejandro Toledo with 8.7 per cent. Support is lower with current prime minister Jorge del Castillo, and Lambayeque Region president Yehude Simón.
In June 2006, Alan García—a member of the conservative American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA)—won Peru’s presidential election in a run-off against nationalist Humala of the Union for Peru (UP). In July, García officially took over as president. He had previously served as Peru’s head of state from 1985 to 1990, when he oversaw a major economic crisis.
On Aug. 14, former Lima mayor Alberto Andrade criticized Castañeda for the city’s apparent traffic chaos, saying that he failed to properly supervise the construction of new roads, and adding, "Things are done quickly and with no planning; this is why people in Lima are suffering and wasting time".
