Prospective Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr is third with four per cent, followed by independent candidate Ralph Nader with three per cent. In a separate match-up, Illinois senator Barack Obama leads McCain by three points, with Barr and Nader in single digits.
Barr represented Georgia’s 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003.
Earlier this month, Barr announced the formation of an exploratory committee, saying, "One thing that’s changed is that, since 9/11 the government, particularly this administration under George W. Bush, largely with a compliant Congress under the hands of both parties, has so decimated our civil liberties in this country that one really has to go back and take a look at all these different areas in which government has been involved and take a hard look at them."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 4.
