(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The governing Left, Liberal Party of Denmark (V) continues to be the country’s most popular political organization, according to a poll by Catinét Research released by Ritzau. 26.4 per cent of respondents would vote for the centre-right party in the next general election.
The Social Democracy in Denmark (SD) is second with 22.7 per cent, followed by the Socialist People’s Party (SF) with 16.6 per cent, the Danish People’s Party (DF) with 15 per cent, the Conservative People’s Party (KF) with 11.2 per cent, and the Radical Left-Social Liberal Party (RV) with 4.4 per cent. Support is lower for the Unity List-The Red Greens (EL), the Christian Democrats (KD), and New Alliance (NA).
A legislative election took place in November 2007. The Liberals received 26.3 per cent of the vote and secured 46 seats, followed by the Social Democrats with 25.5 per cent and 45 mandates. The ruling coalition—encompassing V, KF and DF—took control of 89 seats, one short of the 90 required to govern without the support of another political party. The NA, which won 2.8 per cent of the vote and five seats, joined the administration. Liberal leader Anders Fogh Rasmussen—who has served as prime minister since November 2001—retained his position.
Rasmussen has created a profile on the internet social networking site Facebook to connect with "ordinary Danes", and has even arranged some personal, casual meetings with some of his friends in the network. On Apr. 18, Soeren Lauridsen—one of the prime minister’s aides—said that Rasmussen "has 12,000 supporters now on Facebook," adding that the Danish prime minister is "only just behind [California governor] Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he’s the Europe Facebook champion."
