(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega has lost public backing over the past few months, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in La Prensa. 21 per cent of respondents think Ortega is doing a good or very good job in leading the country, down seven points since last October.

In November 2006, Ortega—a member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN)—won the presidential election with 37.99 per cent of all cast ballots. Presidential candidates in Nicaragua are not compelled to garner more than 50 per cent of the vote in order to win the election.

Ortega governed from 1985 to 1990, but was a losing candidate in the 1990, 1996 and 2001 ballots. In January 2007, he was sworn in for a five-year term.

Last month, Ortega praised Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama, calling him "a revolutionary phenomenon" in U.S. politics. Ortega added: "It’s not to say that there is already a revolution under way in the U.S., but yes, they are laying the bases for a revolutionary change. (…) I have faith in God and in the North American people, and above all in the young, that the moment of great change in the U.S. will come and it will act differently, with justice and equality toward all nations."
