(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The governing Progressive Conservative keeps the upper hand in Alberta, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 43 per cent of decided voters in the Canadian province would back the Tories in next week’s ballot.

The Alberta Liberals—led by Kevin Taft—are in second place with 28 per cent, followed by Brian Mason’s New Democratic Party with 13 per cent, Paul Hinman’s Wildrose Alliance Party with 10 per cent, and the provincial Greens—led by George Read—with seven per cent.

A separate calculation—which takes into account the views of respondents who are absolutely certain to cast a ballot on Mar. 3—narrows the gap between the Tories and the Liberals to nine points.

Ralph Klein became premier of Alberta in December 1992. In the November 2004 election, his Progressive Conservative party elected 62 lawmakers to the 83-seat Legislative Assembly. In March 2006, Klein announced his retirement after only 55 per cent of party members supported him in a mandatory secret ballot review. In December 2006, former Alberta international and intergovernmental relations minister Ed Stelmach became the new leader of the Progressive Conservatives and Alberta’s premier.

On Feb. 26, Stelmach promised more tax relief, adding, "We are the only party to have a transparent and achievable plan that outlines how we will manage the province’s growth and keep the prosperity right here in Alberta, and we have a track record that proves we can do it."

Today, Taft expressed disappointment with the current state of affairs in Alberta, saying, "The Tories have done nothing to solve the affordable housing crisis, fix health care or protect the environment. (…) It’s time for a change—we need a new government."
