(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – More than half of Democratic Party supporters in the United States think Hillary Rodham Clinton should become their presidential nominee next year, according to a poll by Harris Interactive. 52 per cent of respondents would back the New York senator in a 2008 presidential primary, up seven points since October.

Illinois senator Barack Obama is second with 29 per cent, followed by former North Carolina senator John Edwards with 11 per cent. Support is lower for Delaware senator Joe Biden, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich, New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, and Connecticut senator Chris Dodd.

On Nov. 20 in Iowa, Dodd discussed his chances, saying, "More than 70 per cent of the likely caucus goers are undecided and that’s when you consider all the attention that’s been paid to so-called top tier candidates. You wonder how that can be and yet people are not satisfied with the top tier, they are shopping."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
