(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton holds the upper hand in a 2008 United States presidential contest against Republican Rudy Giuliani, according to a poll by RT Strategies for the Cook Political Report. 46 per cent of respondents would back the New York senator in 2008, while 43 per cent would vote for the former New York City mayor.
Support for Rodham Clinton increased by one point since September, while backing for Giuliani remained stable.
On Nov. 16, Giuliani discussed his fiscal policies, saying, "Hillary Clinton will give you a much bigger central government. I will give you a smaller central government and I will return more authority to you—and I’ll let you keep more money in your pocket so you can spend it. If you raise taxes you shrink our economy. If you raise taxes there’s less business in America, there’s less investment in America, and consequently there will be less jobs in America."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
