(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – A third of Republican Party supporters in the United States would like Rudy Giuliani to become their presidential nominee next year, according to a poll by Hart/McInturff released by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. 33 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a 2008 presidential primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 16 per cent, followed by actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 15 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with 11 per cent, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee with eight per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul, California congressman Duncan Hunter, and Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.
On Nov. 9, Thompson discussed his plan to slow the growth rate of the Social Security system and reduce the overall cost of the program, saying, "Social Security is an American institution and deserves to be saved. The ugly truth is, we are going to lose it if we don’t do something."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
