(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Rudy Giuliani is holding on to the top position in the race for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released by Fox News. 34 per cent of respondents would support the New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 22 per cent, followed by Arizona senator John McCain with 16 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent. Support is lower for California congressman Duncan Hunter, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Texas congressman Ron Paul, Kansas senator Sam Brownback, Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, and Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel.

On Sept. 14, McCain discussed the recommendations of commander of the Multi-National Force – Iraq David Petraeus for the coalition effort in Iraq, saying, "This is the strategy that I advocated the first six months of the conflict. I would hope that would incline (voters) to me favourably when they judge my qualifications—the fact that I was correct in my assessment of the failures and correct in my assessment of what was needed to succeed."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
