(CPOD) Jun. 6, 2003 – Questions about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq have split British residents over Tony Blair’s credibility, according to a poll by YouGov for Sky News. 46 per cent of respondents say they trust the prime minister, while 43 per cent believe Blair distorted information.
The alleged possession of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Saddam Hussein’s regime was the major reason for the war against Iraq. Lack of evidence has prompted a British parliamentary committee to launch an inquiry into the rationale for the conflict.
The controversy might prove costly for Blair in the upcoming 2006 general election. 70 per cent of respondents say it matters “a lot” if Blair misled the country, and only 38 per cent say the issue does not change their vote.
