(CPOD) Jun. 20, 2003 – The search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq continues to affect Tony Blair’s credibility in Britain, according to a poll by Populus published in The Times. 58 per cent of respondents say the prime minister and the American government misled the public over the threat posed by Iraq.
Blair has been criticized by the opposition and members of his own party for allegedly overstating intelligence reports to make the case for war more plausible. Despite the controversy, 70 per cent of respondents believe the Iraqi conflict was justified to remove Saddam Hussein from power.
Blair’s party has also been hurt by the allegations, as 37 per cent of respondents say they would vote Labour if an election were held tomorrow. The ruling political organization holds a slim four per cent lead over the Conservatives.
