(CPOD) Jul. 19, 2003 – Abel Pacheco is losing support in Costa Rica, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in La Repºblica. 39 per cent of respondents say the president’s performance has been good.
Pacheco, of the Social-Christian Unity Party (PSUC), was elected in a run-off in April 2002. The president was criticized for his moral support to the war on Iraq, an important issue for Costa Rica, the only Central American country with no established armed forces. Pacheco’s efforts have also included negotiations toward a free trade agreement with the United States, and a crackdown on corruption regarding illegal social housing deals.
Pacheco’s popularity has been hurt after lengthy work stoppages by teachers and energy workers. Four cabinet members left their posts over the last few weeks, including chief of staff Rina Contreras and finance minister Jorge Walter Bolaños.
