McClintock Won First Debate, Say Californians

(CPOD) Sept. 9, 2003 – Republican Tom McClintock was the victor in the first debate of California gubernatorial candidates, according to a poll by Survey USA released by News10. 30 per cent of respondents believe McClintock won the contest, while 22 per cent say Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante had a better showing.

Governor Gray Davis – re-elected just last November – has suffered from low approval ratings as a result of the state’s energy crisis and budget deficit.

Early front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to skip the Sept. 3 meeting. 55 per cent of respondents say the actor’s decision was wrong. Schwarzenegger has confirmed his participation in an encounter to be held in Sacramento on Sept. 24.
