South Africans Split Over Mbeki

Mbeki replaced Nelson Mandela as president after the 1999 election, where the African National Council (ANC) got 66.4 per cent of the vote and 266 members in the 400-seat National Assembly.
The president is participating as a mediator in the dispute between the government of Burundi and armed group Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD). The next general election in South Africa will take place on Aug. 2, 2004.
