Lagos appears to have left a corruption scandal behind. Fraud, bribery and tax evasion charges have been laid against more than 100 government officials over the past two years. The biggest problem occurred when an employee at the Central Bank sold classified information to business group Inverlink.
The president recently presented a proposal to deal with abuses committed during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. The plan increases economic compensation to relatives of victims, expedites pending judicial processes against suspected human rights violators and contemplates an admonition to differentiate the high-ranking officials who planned the repression from the lower-level soldiers who followed orders.
