On Nov. 26, Nicaraguan Justice Juana Mendez agreed to let former president Arnoldo Aleman out of prison, and keep him under house arrest. Aleman –who governed the country from 1997 to 2002– faces charges of fraud, money laundering and embezzlement.

Mendez –a supporter of the Sandinista movement– justified her decision on medical reasons, as Aleman suffers from obesity and heart problems. Many political observers believe the ruling hints at a possible a political alliance between the Sandinistas and the governing Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC).
