Michael Howard –a former interior minister under John Major in the early 1990s– became the new Conservative leader, substituting Iain Duncan Smith. Tory lawmakers were disappointed that the party could not capitalize on a controversy surrounding prime minister Tony Blair’s use of intelligence before the war in Iraq.
The Liberal Democrats remain in third place with 19 per cent.
