(CPOD) Dec. 2, 2003 – Residents of Finland want their say before becoming a partner in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), according to a poll by the Suomen Gallup Group published in daily Aamulehti. 61 per cent of respondents support holding a public referendum to decide if the country should join the military alliance.

Finns have debated over NATO for several years. Some residents argue that membership could damage the country’s special relationship with Russia, while others point out that Finland should definitely participate in Europe’s foremost security alliance.
