Toledo –elected in a run-off on Jun. 3, 2001– has been pushing hard for the extradition of former president Alberto Fujimori, currently living in Japan, on charges that include murder, kidnapping and misuse of public funds.

Last month, Peru’s trade and tourism minister Raul Diez Canseco resigned from cabinet, after accounts of a possible tax-exemption offer to the father of his alleged girlfriend became public.

Rumors circulated in Peru’s media that prime minister Beatriz Merino –appointed by Toledo in July– was quitting her post. Merino is currently regarded as one of the most popular members of Toledo’s cabinet.
