(CPOD) Dec. 3, 2003 – Nestor Kirchner continues to enjoy popularity in Argentina, according to a poll by Equis published in daily El Clarin. 88 per cent of respondents have a positive assessment of the president.
Kirchner took office last May, after former president Carlos Menem trailed in the polls and decided to withdraw from a run-off election.
Earlier this year, the president revoked a decree that prohibited military officers from being tried in foreign countries. The decision effectively withdraws immunity for 40 people suspected of human rights violations during the 1976-1983 dictatorship.
Kirchner also ordered justice minister Gustavo Beliz to ask Swiss authorities to uncover bank accounts held by some politicians, allegedly including Menem.
