(CPOD) Dec. 16, 2003 – Nicaraguan adults are concerned about the elimination of powerful weapons currently in possession of their army, according to a poll by CID-Gallup. 52 per cent of respondents disagree with the destruction of more than 2,000 SAM-7 missiles.
The United States government has long argued that the arms could fall into the wrong hands, a position that became more adamant after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Nicaraguan army chief Javier Carrion recently stated that not all missiles will be destroyed.
The surface-to-air military hardware was originally provided by the Soviet Union in the 1980s, as a tool to fight the U.S.-backed “Contras.”
