(CPOD) Dec. 18, 2003 – A new political setback has affected Alejandro Toledo in Peru, according to a poll by Apoyo. Only 11 per cent of respondents approve of the president’s performance.

Prime minister Beatriz Merino –appointed by Toledo in July– quit her post earlier this month after allegations surfaced about her role in the appointment of a female friend to a public post. Merino was one of the most popular members of Toledo’s cabinet. The president named Carlos Ferrero as Merino’s replacement.

Last month, Peru’s trade and tourism minister Raul Diez Canseco resigned from cabinet, after accounts of a possible tax-exemption offer to the father of his alleged girlfriend became public.

Toledo –elected in a run-off on Jun. 3, 2001– has been pushing hard for the extradition of former president Alberto Fujimori, currently living in Japan, on charges that include murder, kidnapping and misuse of public funds.
