Lula –a three-time presidential candidate– won the October 2002 election with 61 per cent of the vote in a run-off against Jose Serra. Lula began his political career as leader of the Metal Workers Union in 1975, and is credited with transforming the government-regulated labor movement into an independent, autonomous group.
The ruling Worker’s Party recently expelled four lawmakers from its ranks after they voted against Lula’s tax reforms and pension proposals. Representatives Joao Fontes, Luciana Genro and Batista de Araujo, along with senator Heloisa Helena, were voted off by the party’s ruling body on Dec. 15.
