Chavez’s opponents officially launched a bid to hold a constitutionally-approved referendum last summer, and presented more than 3.2 million signatures to back their proposal. On Sept. 12, the idea was rejected, after the electoral commission alleged that the signatures had been collected before Chavez was halfway through his term.
The electoral commission established a new period for a referendum petition. On Dec. 19, proponents of a referendum on the president delivered more than 3.4 million signatures to the electoral council. Once the validation process is completed, a binding plebiscite on Chavez could be called within the next 97 days.
