Gutierrez first became a household name in Ecuador in 2000, when he led a coup to topple President Jamil Mahuad. The former Army general became a presidential candidate, campaigning on a tough anti-corruption agenda. Gutierrez was elected in November 2002, after garnering 58.7 per cent of the votes in a run-off over Alvaro Noboa.

This past November, a newspaper claimed that Gutierrez’s party received a $30,000 U.S. contribution from Cesar Fernandez, a politician charged with drug trafficking. The president has denied the allegations.
