(CPOD) Jan. 27, 2004 – Many Italians are distressed over their government’s handling of the economy, according to a poll by Eurispes. 44.6 per cent of respondents say the government’s policy has failed, and 21.1 per cent say the current strategy does not fit the current needs of the country.
Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has pledged to implement tax cuts and regulate major public works, in an effort to revitalize the country’s financial status.
A scandal involving dairy producer Parmalat has also affected views in Italy. On Dec. 19, 2003, the company revealed a “false” $4.9 billion U.S. account. Parmalat has since entered bankruptcy protection.
Eleven people –including company founder Calisto Tanzi– have been detained while the investigation progresses. Tanzi admitted to prosecutors that he used Parmalat’s funds to help his family’s languishing travel business.
