Californians Back Kerry Over Dean

(CPOD) Jan. 29, 2004 – Massachusetts senator John Kerry is now the top Democratic presidential hopeful in California, according to a poll by Survey USA released by KABC-TV. 31 per cent of respondents would vote for Kerry in the state’s primary, a five per cent lead over former Vermont governor Howard Dean.

Retired general Wesley Clark leads the rest of the field with 14 per cent, followed by North Carolina senator John Edwards. The California primary is scheduled for Mar. 2. Seven states –Arizona, Delaware, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, North Dakota and South Carolina– will hold votes on Feb. 3.

Kerry won the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 27, as well as the Iowa caucus on Jan. 19. Dean finished second in New Hampshire and third in Iowa.

Democrat Al Gore won the state’s 54 electoral votes in the 2000 presidential election, with 54 per cent of the vote. The last Republican to carry California was George H. Bush in 1988.
