(CPOD) Feb. 2, 2004 – Many Missouri Democratic voters want Massachusetts senator John Kerry to become the party’s presidential nominee, according to a poll by the Los Angeles Times and CNN. 37 per cent of respondents would support Kerry in the state’s primary election, a 26 per cent lead over North Carolina senator John Edwards.
(CPOD) Feb. 2, 2004 – Many Missouri Democratic voters want Massachusetts senator John Kerry to become the party’s presidential nominee, according to a poll by the Los Angeles Times and CNN. 37 per cent of respondents would support Kerry in the state’s primary election, a 26 per cent lead over North Carolina senator John Edwards.
Former Vermont governor Howard Dean leads the rest of the field with seven per cent. Voting intention was affected after Missouri congressman Dick Gephardt withdrew from the race on Jan. 20.
Kerry won the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 27, as well as the Iowa caucus on Jan. 19. Edwards finished second in Iowa and fourth in New Hampshire.
Seven states –Arizona, Delaware, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, North Dakota and South Carolina– will hold votes tomorrow. Gephardt’s name will appear on the Missouri ballots, which were made before his departure announcement.
George W. Bush won Missouri’s 11 electoral votes in 2000, with 50.4 per cent of all cast ballots. Aside from the 1956 presidential election, the state has picked the eventual winner in every contest since 1900.
