(CPOD) Feb. 4, 2004 – Alejandro Toledo has reached the lowest degree of public support in Peru, according to a poll by CPI. Only 7.3 per cent of respondents approve of the president’s performance.

Toledo addressed the nation this past weekend after the latest scandal to affect his presidency. On Jan. 30, a taped audio conversation revealed illicit dealings between Toledo’s advisor Cesar Almeyda and Gen. Oscar Villanueva, a close friend of Vladimiro Montesinos, the country’s former intelligence head.

Montesinos –considered an influential figure in a series of corruption problems during the presidency of Alberto Fujimori– was sentenced to nine years in prison for influence peddling last year, after demanding the firing of a journalist in exchange for help in two court cases.

The government’s current difficulties have led many Peruvians to question whether they will have a new head of state soon. 39.1 per cent of respondents say Toledo –elected in a run-off on Jun. 3, 2001– will not be able to complete his five-year term.
