(CPOD) Feb. 6, 2004 – Massachusetts senator John Kerry is the first choice for Democrat voters in the United States, according to a poll by Gallup released by CNN and USA Today. 49 per cent of respondents would choose Kerry as the party’s nominee in the 2004 presidential election.

Former Vermont governor Howard Dean is second with 14 per cent, followed by North Carolina senator John Edwards and retired general Wesley Clark.
Candidate predilection was significantly altered after the first Democratic nomination contests in Iowa and New Hampshire last month. Kerry’s preference went up by 40 per cent in four weeks, while Dean’s dropped by 10 per cent in the same period.
Kerry has won this year’s Democratic presidential contests in Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico and North Dakota. Edwards was the winner in South Carolina, and Clark came in first in Oklahoma. Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman has withdrawn from the race.
