(CPOD) Feb. 10, 2004 – Massachusetts senator John Kerry holds a commanding lead in today’s Tennessee Democratic presidential primary, according to a poll by Zogby International released by MSNBC and Reuters. 45 per cent of respondents would vote for Kerry, a 24 per cent advantage over North Carolina senator John Edwards.

Retired general Wesley Clark leads the rest of the field with 19 per cent, followed by former Vermont governor Howard Dean with five per cent.

Kerry has won this year’s Democratic presidential contests in Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota and Washington State, making him the frontrunner for his party’s nomination. Edwards was the winner in South Carolina, and Clark came in first in Oklahoma.

Republican George W. Bush carried the state’s 11 electoral votes in 2000, defeating Democrat Al Gore –a Tennessee native– by less than 79,000 ballots. Tennessee has picked the eventual White House dweller in each of the last nine presidential elections.
