Two Parties Fight For First In Austria’s EU Race

(CPOD) Jun. 11, 2004 – The People’s Party (OVP) holds a slight lead among Austrian voters in the election to the European Parliament, according to a poll released by ATVPlus. 35 per cent of respondents would vote for the OVP, while 34 per cent would support the Social-Democratic Party of Austria (SPO).

The Greens (Grune) are third with 12 per cent, followed by the list of independent candidates headed by Hans-Peter Martin with 11 per cent. The election is scheduled for Jun. 13.

In the 1999 European Parliament election, the SPO received 31.7 per cent of the vote, while the OVP got 30.7 per cent. Austria will elect 18 members to the 732-seat European Parliament.
