Blair—of the Labour party—has been Britain’s prime minister since 1997, ending 19 uninterrupted years of Conservative administrations. Blair earned a second term in 2001 with 413 lawmakers in the 659-seat House of Commons.

In April, Blair suggested holding a nationwide referendum on the European Constitution. Last year, the prime minister was criticized for allegedly overstating intelligence reports to make the case for war against Iraq more plausible.

Britain must renew the House of Commons by June 2006.
