(CPOD) Jul. 30, 2004 – Many Venezuelans are worried about security, according to a poll by Evans/McDonough Company, Inc. 31 per cent of respondents believe public safety is the biggest problem in the country right now.
According to the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), Caracas had the third-highest murder rate of any city in the Americas over the past four years. In 2003, more than six murders were committed every day in the capital city, a 10 per increase from the previous year.
Venezuela’s unemployment rate dropped to 15.5 per cent in March, down from 21 per cent in February. 30 per cent of respondents say job creation should be the main concern.
Head of state Hugo Ch¡vez has been in office since February 1999. On Aug. 15, Venezuelan voters will participate in an unprecedented recall referendum. If Ch¡vez were to lose the plebiscite, new presidential elections would be called within 30 days.
