(CPOD) Jul. 30, 2004 – Rising crime rates are a cause for concern in Guatemala, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in El Peri³dico. 81 per cent of respondents say violence and crime are the main problems in the Central American country right now.
(CPOD) Jul. 30, 2004 – Rising crime rates are a cause for concern in Guatemala, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in El Peri³dico. 81 per cent of respondents say violence and crime are the main problems in the Central American country right now.
In 2004, more than 1,200 people have been killed in violent incidents across Guatemala. Earlier this month, president “scar Berger implemented a controversial disarmament program, where Guatemalans can exchange their weapons for bicycles and sewing machines.
Drug use and trafficking, unemployment and cost of living are also high on the list of priorities for Guatemalans.
The country is still recovering from a 36-year long civil war, that left more than 300,000 people dead or disappeared.
