(CPOD) Oct. 9, 2004 – George W. Bush is leading the United States presidential race in the state of Florida, according to a poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. released by the Orlando Sentinel and WESH-TV. 48 per cent of respondents would vote for the Republican incumbent in the 2004 election, while 44 per cent would support Democratic nominee John Kerry.

Two per cent of respondents would vote for independent candidate Ralph Nader, one per cent would back other contenders and five per cent are undecided. The election is scheduled for Nov. 2.

Support for Bush remained stable since July, while backing for Kerry dropped by two per cent. In April, the Republican held an eight per cent lead over the Democrat.

Florida’s 27 electoral votes decided the 2000 presidential election, after weeks of recounts and court injunctions concluded in a 537-vote victory for Bush over Democrat Al Gore. Since 1972, the only Democrats to carry Florida in a presidential election are Jimmy Carter in 1976 and Bill Clinton in 1996.
