(CPOD) Dec. 3, 2004 – Many Russians are content with Vladimir Putin, according to a poll by the Yury Levada Analytical Center. 69 per cent of respondents approve of the president’s performance, a three per cent drop since October.

Putin won a second four-year term as president in the Mar. 14 election, garnering 71.31 per cent of all cast ballots. The pro-Kremlin United Russia (YR) currently controls 222 seats in the State Duma, a fact that has led to questions over a possible change in presidential term limits.

Yesterday, Putin met with Ukrainian counterpart Leonid Kuchma and criticized the proposal to hold a repeat election in the former Soviet Republic, saying, “A re-vote could be conducted many times, until one side gets the results it needs.”

In neighbouring Uzbekistan, president Islam Karimov chided Putin for his views on the Ukrainian election, saying, “Russia deserves criticism for premature and excessive interest in a certain outcome.” Putin openly supported prime minister Viktor Yanukovych in the election.

Last month, the Ukrainian Central Election Commission declared Yanukovych the winner in the presidential run-off over opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko. The results have not been certified by the Supreme Court and the election was symbolically declared as “invalid” by the legislative Supreme Council in a non-binding vote.
