(Angus Reid Consultants – CPOD Global Scan) – The pro-Kremlin United Russia (YR) remains the most popular political organization in the Russian Federation, according to a poll by Russian Public Opinion & Market Research. 32.8 per cent of respondents would support the party in the next election to the State Duma.

In the December 2003 election to the State Duma, United Russia—a new name for the Inter-Regional Movement of the Russian Federation—got 37.6 per cent of the vote and secured 222 members in the 450-seat Duma. Current president Vladimir Putin was elected to a second term in March 2004.
The Communist Party (KPRF) is a distant second with 9.6 per cent, followed by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), the Motherland – National Patriotic Union (MDRT), the Union of Right Forces (SPS), Yabloko (Liberal) and the Agrarian Party of Russia (APR).
On Dec. 12, Putin signed a controversial bill that effectively eliminates the election of Russia’s 89 governors by popular vote. The provision will allow the president himself to nominate every governor, and await confirmation by regional legislatures.
