In March, Conservative leader Michael Howard criticized prime minister Tony Blair over claims that citizens from Romania and Bulgaria entered Britain with falsified documents. Blair promised a thorough investigation on the matter, and all immigration applications from those two countries were put on hold.
Last week, home secretary David Blunkett resigned over allegations that he used his influence to expedite a visa application for married American Kimberly Quinn’s nanny. Blunkett recently accepted having an affair with Quinn.
In a letter to Blunkett, Blair pointed out, “It is thanks to the tough measures you introduced on asylum that applications are down over 40 per cent and immigration is under control. “
