Japan, Britain and the United States are next on the list with 46 per cent, followed by Germany with 45 per cent, France with 42 per cent, Italy with 41 per cent, China with 27 per cent, and Russia with 26 per cent. More than 30 per cent of respondents hold negative views on Russia and China.
On May 27, an editorial in China’s state-owned People’s Daily newspaper criticized a recent report by the Pentagon, which claims that China is spending considerable resources in military defence capabilities. The article read: “Once again this (annual) report one-sidedly plays up the ‘China threat’. The report, which attempts to mislead international opinions with falsehoods, obviously runs counter to developing bilateral ties and military relations between the two countries.”
Yesterday, a report by the U.S. Treasury Department concluded that China’s yuan is undervalued, adding, “Treasury was unable to determine that China’s exchange rate policy was carried out for the purpose of preventing effective balance of payments adjustment or gaining unfair competitive advantage in international trade.”
