Bush—a Republican—earned a second four-year term in the November 2004 presidential election. Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 238-194 to allow federal funding for research performed on stem cells obtained from days-old embryos stored in fertility clinics.
On May 20, Bush declared, “I made very clear to Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayer’s money, to promote science which destroys life in order to save life—I’m against that. Therefore, if the bill does that, I would veto it.”
A second bill, which seeks to establish a national bank of blood products from umbilical cords available for research and treatment, passed after a 431-1 vote. The two proposed pieces of legislation must be reviewed by the Senate.
Bush’s highest approval rating in a Gallup poll was 90 per cent on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22, 2001, a few days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
