(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Jim Gibbons could win the gubernatorial election in the Silver State, according to a poll by Strategic Surveys Inc. published in the Las Vegas Sun. At least 41.9 per cent of respondents would vote for the current U.S. congressman in head-to-head contests against four prospective Democratic rivals.

The poll was commissioned by Gibbons himself, and did not include two other prospective Republican contenders: lieutenant governor Lorraine Hunt and state senator Bob Beers.

Gibbons holds a 5.6-point edge over state senator Dina Titus and a 9.8-point advantage over Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman. The Republican congressman holds double-digit leads over both Henderson mayor Jim Gibson and Assembly speaker Richard Perkins.

Kenny Guinn—a Republican—has acted as Nevada’s governor since January 1999. The businessman earned a second consecutive term in the November 2002 election, defeating Democrat Joe Neal with 62 per cent of the vote.

Guinn is ineligible for a third term in office. The election is scheduled for November 2006. Since 1911, the Silver State has had seven Republicans and nine Democrats as heads of government.
