(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Current interior minister and Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) leader Nicolas Sarkozy is regarded as the best prospective presidential contender for France’s centre-right, according to a poll by CSA published in Le Bleu de Profession Politique. 63 per cent of respondents believe Sarkozy would be a good candidate.
Current prime minister Dominique de Villepin is second with 57 per cent, followed by defence minister Mich¨le Alliot-Marie with 51 per cent, employment minister Jean-Louis Borloo with 44 per cent, Union for French Democracy (UDF) leader Fran§ois Bayrou with 43 per cent, foreign minister Philippe Douste-Blazy with 35 per cent, and Movement for France (MPF) leader Philippe de Villiers with 27 per cent.
UMP member Jacques Chirac won the presidential ballot in 1995, and was re-elected in a run-off over Jean-Marie Le Pen in May 2002. The next election is tentatively scheduled for April 2007.
