(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Republican U.S. congressman Jim Gibbons would fare better in Nevada’s gubernatorial race against Democratic state senator Dina Titus, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 46 per cent of respondents in the Silver State would support Gibbons in this year’s election, while 41 per cent would vote for Titus.

In a separate contest, Democratic Henderson mayor Jim Gibson holds a five-point advantage over Gibbons.
Kenny Guinn—a Republican—has acted as Nevada’s governor since January 1999. The businessman earned a second consecutive term in the November 2002 election, defeating Democrat Joe Neal with 62 per cent of the vote. Guinn is ineligible for a third term in office.
On Feb. 3, Gibbons called for tougher state campaign finance reporting laws. Gibbons suggested enacting the mandatory online reporting of donors, as well as changing existing regulations so that contributions can be reported before voting begins.
The election is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1911, the Silver State has had seven Republican and nine Democratic heads of government.
